Katie Uncorked is a blog of all things bookish. You will find book reviews, literary musings and writing tips/tricks/struggles. While I am by no means an expert in wine, I do have a knack for pairing wines with my current reads. You can use the categories on the menu to further explore books reviews (from my never-ending “To Read” list) with wine suggestions. You’ll also find writing and bookish musings ranging from my own successes and struggles to my favorite literary styles and characters. My name is Katie and I am a lover of all things literary. I have always been that individual, from 3rd grade to the present, who can tune out all the noisy surroundings to read my books; as a student, from third grade through college, I spent a great deal of my free time writing extra book reports for fun. In the fourth grade, I wrote and illustrated a book of poetry and bound it together on my mom’s sewing machine to celebrate testing out of a language arts unit. I couldn’t get enough when it came to books and nothing much has changed. My seventh grade teacher would assign us a biography book report every month and I was that girl standing among the bins of books having a straight-up anxiety attack because I was only supposed to select one. I needed to read. I wanted to be sucked into whatever bookish world I had in front of me and be a part of the story. I wanted to learn. And, as I grew older, I wanted to write something that mattered.
I graduated from Alma College in 2010 with honors and a B.A. in English Literature. I taught for two years in Chicago through Teach For America before returning to school to obtain a degree in occupational therapy. For over five years, I worked at an outpatient facility for individuals with developmental disabilities. Now, I am a stay-at-home mom. Like any modern woman, I struggle to balance a full time job (SAHM), spending time with my husband, exercising, trying to get published, working on my next project and finding time to read. This blog was started because of my constant complaining that I am not reading nearly as much as I would like. Everyone knows that in order to be a better writer one needs to be an avid reader.
